Spelling Homework
At the beginning of the school year, each child is given spelling assessments to determine what he or she already knows about spelling. They are checked for both mastery of frequently used words and their skill with a variety of spelling features. This information helps to more effectively group the class and provides important baseline data.
At the beginning of each week each child is given a pretest on words with a particular spelling concept (ex. long and short i words, orhomophones). Any words that the child does not get correct are added to her spelling list for that week. The students are then asked to select from a "Shopping List" of words (words that follow the spelling concept of the week) to build a final list of twelve words. This word list is copied over and sent home to study in preparation for the test at the end of the week. In class, we also revisit the spelling concept, most often to analyze the similarities and differences we see, and to sort the words using these observations.
In the first trimester, I assign a variety of different spelling activities meant to expose the children to different studying strategies meant to . This homework is due on Wednesday.
